I have only ever connected with one other literary couple the way I connected with Trevor and Leah. Jacinta Howard, made me root for them. I cried with them. I could see myself in them. This novel is written not with purple prose but the stark reality of relationships. Jacinta Howard writes each and every word and it is palpable. Through Trevor and Leah's, I thought about my own feelings about love. I immersed myself in this book. Trevor and Leah loves each other but is love ever enough. Leah's past continues to haunt her as well as Trevor's singularly focused expectations of what they should be. Will they be able to find common ground? With the turn of each page, I was on the edge. There were moments where I had to take a break because things were too heavy and hit home. Will Trevor and Leah triumph over the obstacles both externally and internally? I am a Jacinta Howard fan. I first read the partial version of this book in a compilation. It took me awhile to read the book in entirety because I "thought" I knew how the book would unfold---I have to admit, I was wrong. The second phase of the books goes deeper and delves into the rockier terrain of Leah and Trevor as individuals and a collective. I was rooting for Leah. I wanted her to overcome her past issues and baggage. I desperately wanted her to win not only in love but life! I was afraid that self sabotage would ruin her chances of fruitful love and life but thank goodness that Trevor didn't give up on her and Jacinta wouldn't allow the reader to either. Trevor was a big contradiction at times. He was so passionate, loving, wise, and all consumed with Leah but he still had his ish going on internally as well. I liked how they learned to work through their issues. I thought it was spot on for not only newlyweds but for some seasoned couples as well. This was an emotional read and there were some chapters with no relief in sight. However, the book in its entirety is so satisfying, so complete, and oh so good!
This couple that Jacinta Howard created was such a treat. I first met them in the BMHSS compilation and they were one of my favorite couples. It was actually the first time I'd ever read anything by the author. After that I went and bought several of her books- I actually think I have all of them lol!
This... This was different in that, she actually married this couple up in the full second installment. She gave us a glimpse into a newly married couple's lives and their struggle to adapt to that life. She gave us an image of two becoming one. That in itself is powerful. Many times in this genre, we get hot and heavy romantic unmarried couples- but Howrad makes Trvevor make Leah an "honest" woman as we say in the south. It was brilliant. The couple and their struggles are very true to what any young , newly married couple might experience. It's just a special thing to see it come together so effortlessly in a story. And what is so hot, is that Trevor doesn't lose an ounce of fiyah because he's a married man. I've read most of her work and I am having a difficult time choosing Travis or Trevor as the dopest guy she's written.
Howard has been nominated for an award for Finding Kennedy which is a no brainier, but I'm like whoever does these awards don't need to sleep on Blind Expectations.
Blind Expectations takes an intricate look into the multidimensional bond between two people who start off as friends and later find themselves in new territory as their relationship becomes romantic. Trevor and Leah are drawn to each other at first meeting. They have an unavoidable connection no matter the circumstances or people who come into their lives. Their love for one another is kismet and drives them to act at times irrationally for fear of losing one another. Jacinta Howard effortlessly depicts a love so pure between the two that in spite of the mess they sometimes find themselves in you still want them to find their way together.
Howard explores not only Trevor and Leah’s road to finding love but in Part 2 she shows what happens after. Both characters are flawed but real. Their humanness and complexity is what draws the reader in and the depths of passion they have for one another is what makes them such a magnetic coupling. At the end of Part 1, you could almost believe that Trevor and Leah’s story is a fairytale with happily ever after. Part 2, however, delves into the challenges the two face as a committed couple and how they go about working through them. Although I did not like the handling of the situation with Paris, I really enjoyed the story and give it 4.5 stars. The scene during the holiday dinner seemed a little unlikely.
Blind Expectations is a read that you will find hard to put down. Howard’s writing is soulful, inspiring and heart wrenching at the same time but touches the reader no matter what emotion you draw from it. The story is realistic and the characters were endearing. Blind Expectations reminds us that there are no steadfast rules when it comes to love. Love is the one area in life that is full of surprises.
There are a few things I like about the author, the stories she writes are always well written in my opinion. She has the ability to capture your attention and capture your emotions in the story right from the outset. The other thing I like which I will call it the authors signature style is the use of nicknames in the stories she writes. Blind Expectations definitely deals with some challenging issues. It's a good story, very nicely developed. The only thing I could have done without is some of the language.
